Stade Rennais FC spent €10m on Mikayil Faye in 2024, but the Senegalese defender is yet to play a single competitive game for the club. The 21-year-old, currently on loan at FC Nuremberg in the German second division, is impressing in training but has not yet convinced on the pitch.
Nuremberg coach Miroslav Klose praised the young defender's progress. "Mikayil impresses more and more; he has been training with the team for a while now. You can see his excellent technique," he said. The German club holds an option to buy the player, which could be triggered at the end of the season if his performances improve.
This situation complicates Stade Rennais's strategy. Faye's contract includes a buy-back clause in favour of FC Barcelona set at €25m. With so little playing time since his departure from Catalonia, it will be difficult for the Breton club to make a significant profit on this investment.
Stade Rennais FC's sporting context is also delicate, with just one win in their last five matches. The 4-0 defeat at Lyon on 19 September confirmed their inconsistent form. The defence, where Faye could have contributed, is currently seeking stable solutions for this season.
