Stade Rennais FC is set to complete the loan signing of Charlie Cresswell for the 2026-2027 season. The Toulouse FC centre-back, who was also tracked by Premier League clubs Crystal Palace and Fulham, has opted to stay in Ligue 1 to further his development.
Who is Charlie Cresswell?
Charlie Cresswell, 23, is a centre-back who came through the ranks at Leeds United. He joined Toulouse FC in July 2024 and quickly established himself as one of Ligue 1’s most promising young defenders. In two seasons, he has made over 50 appearances, scored eight goals and provided five assists. His aerial ability and defensive awareness have caught the eye of several clubs.
Why does Stade Rennais FC need Cresswell?
Despite having six centre-backs in his squad, Franck Haise wants to strengthen his defensive options. Lilian Brasier, linked with Deportivo La Coruna, could leave the club, while Abdelhamid Ait-Boudlal and Jonathan Do Marcolino lack experience. Cresswell will bring solidity and height to Stade Rennais FC’ defence.
What are Cresswell’s other options?
Crystal Palace and Fulham have also shown interest in the defender. The Eagles are looking for a replacement for Marc Guéhi, while the Cottagers have lost Issa Diop and could see Jorge Cuenca leave. However, Cresswell has chosen to remain in France to continue his progress.
