Stade Rennais FC confirms Breel Embolo's departure to Atlanta United
The Breton club has officially announced the transfer of Swiss striker Breel Embolo to Atlanta United. According to Ouest-France, the Americans have triggered the player's release clause for €17 million, making it the fourth most expensive transfer in MLS history.
A career marked by ups and downs
Embolo, who scored eight goals and provided three assists in 31 Ligue 1 games last season, has had a rollercoaster career. After promising beginnings at Basel, he was signed by Schalke for €26.5M in 2016, but a serious ankle injury hampered his progress. He then rebounded at Gladbach before joining Stade Rennais FC in 2022.
A new challenge in MLS
With his speed and goal-scoring ability, Embolo could become a major asset for Atlanta United. The Swiss, who shone at the World Cup with two goals and two assists in six games, will bring his international experience to the American franchise.
What are the consequences for Stade Rennais FC?
Embolo's departure leaves a gap to fill in the Stade Rennais FC attack. Franck Haise, the coach, will need to find a replacement capable of matching the Swiss striker's performances, who scored 27 goals in 97 Ligue 1 games for Stade Rennais FC.
